Title I Reading Credential

All coursework leading to the credential is offered online.

  1. Hold a valid North Dakota educator’s professional license.
  2. Have a major, or endorsement, in elementary education.
  3. Complete the following courses:
    EDUC 375Teaching Reading in the Content Areas2
    EDUC 430Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Difficulties3
    EDUC 431Practicum in Corrective Reading (Elementary)2
  4. Complete a minimum of eight semester hours in no fewer than three courses.  The coursework must consist of no more than two classes from each of the following areas:
    Early Childhood
    EDUC 310Introduction to Early Childhood Education3
    EDUC 313Language and Literacy in Early Childhood Education2
    Research & Literature in Reading/Language Arts
    EDUC 321Foundations of Reading Instruction3
    EDUC 323Methods of Reading in the Elementary School2
    EDUC 330Children's Literature3
    Exceptional Child
    EDUC 240Educating Exceptional Students2
    EDUC 340Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disorders, and Intellectual Disabilities3

To obtain a reading credential, students apply to the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction after graduation and attainment of their initial North Dakota license for elementary teaching.
